Mimi Takes Five - #354

ONE // Cherry Blossoms!
Recently, I'd been keeping a close watch on the cherry blossoms because I didn't want to miss them. Because it's been a colder spring, the blooming happened a bit later this year. Last Friday, when on my run, I noticed they were in peak bloom! The streets were lined in pretty blush trees - it was magical! I snapped the above pick right as I was coming home and that's the only picture I got this year. It proceeded to rain and storm all weekend and it decimated the petals. No cherry tree blossoms survived the weekend. I had a feeling they weren't going to last long this year. The phenomenon is so ephemeral, some years, you blink and you miss it! This was one of those years... It's really unfortunate because now the trees look all sad and bare. I'm happy I noticed them and got to enjoy the moment - because that's literally how long it lasted this year!

TWO // Lilac Espadrilles
When I tell you these were the unicorns of shoes, I'm not kidding! We all know my love for espadrilles come summer - they have become my go-to for comfort and style. I've got a few pairs in different colours but am always on the lookout for more. Last year, my lilac sandals started disintegrating. I tried regluing them and stretching out their use but they were just falling apart. Since then, I'd been looking for replacement lilac sandals. When I say this is not an easy colour to find, I'm not being dramatic. Seeing as they were so few and far between, I never imagined I'd ever find lilac espadrilles! Well, I was wrong. I randomly came upon this very pair on Farfetch a few weeks ago. There was one pair left and it was in my size. Plus they were on sale. It really was meant to be! I'm so, so pleased with this find and am here to remind you that the wait is worth it for those fashion unicorns!

THREE // Book Club - Weeks 4 & 5
We had four books to read for this week's book club meet up because the last one was cancelled due to illness. That being said, four books to discuss is a lot and I think we'll be using some of the time from the next session to wrap up the discussion. I've really been loving this book club because I'm learning so much. I thought I had a decent grasp on the subject but turns out I was only scratching the surface. The more specific topics of this week were First Nations, Métis and Inuit issues in Canada and more generally Indigenous life in Canada; and starting to discuss the notion of pretendianism and the convoluted nature of DNA to claim Indigenous identity. The struggles and lived experiences of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada have been traumatic enough without adding a layer of non-Indigenous people claiming Indigenous identities to take advantage of perceived privileges and muddying the waters of those trying to legitimately reconnect with their heritage and cultures. The phenomenon is baffling to me and just adds complexities to the already fraught path to true reconciliation.

FOUR // Painting Workshop!
Last year, I got to participate in a paint workshop at work. Well, they brought back the activity this year so I signed up again! While I loved last year's image, I wasn't loving this year's option. It was basically a fluffy dandelion on a fun, colourful background. It was a cute image, but I sort of had my heart set on a fall-themed image... Go figure! So, I decided to go rogue and paint chrysanthemums instead. It seemed a simple enough swap and I could work with the colour palette of the original piece. So I brought along an inspiration image to help guide me as there'd be no step-by-step instructions for me. Once I did the background, I was on my own! I had fun mixing my own shades of orange, green and darker red while trying to manage with the brushes I had on hand. I think I would have needed a finer tip brush to achieve more delicate petals... That being said, I kept going and built layers to try and get some dimension. I'm not mad at the result, but feel the blueish background is making my flowers look more like sea plants or even something from a Dr. Seuss book. It's giving sea anemone or Lorax trees. I have paint and brushes at home, so I might try to improve it. Wish me luck!

FIVE // Wednesday - Season 2
I know it's only spring, but we are past the halfway point to fall and this autumn girly is already compiling her fall to-do list! We are in for a real spooky treat with the release of the second season of Wednesday! Part one releases on August 6 and part two on September 3. I can't wait to get stuck in! The first season launched in November and I remember not loving that timing. However, this year, the timing is peak spooky season! I'm thinking I'll wait for the drop of part two to watch, that way I can binge it all in one go. I mean, this is the ideal thing to transition me from summer to fall. Bring on the mysterious and spooky Addams family vibes!
