ONE // Book Club Wrap Up
My book club on Indigeneity in Canada has come to an end. It was a whirlwind because I read 11 books in 11 weeks... I have done nothing else but read these past few weeks. My husband has never seen me read so much! Not all books were easy to read or digest, but I appreciate every single one. I've learned (and unlearned) so much throughout this process. I was going into this thinking I had decent knowledge on the topic. How does the saying go - the more you know, the less you know. I grasp so much more of the intricacies of the lived experiences of Indigenous peoples of Canada, yet I'm left feeling I still have so much more to learn. However, I do feel better prepared to have the conversations and be a better ally to those communities. I'll hopefully be better able to read through the lines and make those links that have been systemically blurred and broken over the years. We still have a long way to go regarding reconciliation, but I'm actively doing my small part.
TWO // 7 year anniversary!
My husband and I went out for dinner to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary last weekend. We hadn't been out for dinner in a little while, so decided it would be a great time to do so. We made a reservation at Gin et Chips (one of our favourite spots - my husband's cousin is the chef and owner!) We shared the burrata and lobster ravioli to start and then I had the steak frites for my main while my husband had the pork and scallops. The citrus meringue pie and strawberry ice cream for dessert was the most delectable and refreshing finish to a scrumptious meal! It's always a good time when we eat here. We are very picky about our dinner dates, so always pick our spots wisely. This one is a real gem!
THREE // Butter Yellow Dress
I've always loved wearing yellow. It's always been a colour that worked with my skin tone, so I've always had some in my wardrobe. However, it seems to be everywhere this year! Specifically the shade of butter yellow. Naturally, it's the perfect time to add some yellow pieces to my collection. I fell in love with this simple, yet striking maxi dress form Dynamite. I love the simplicity of the silhouette, but that Basque waist is the wow factor! Made from a stretchy heavyweight ponte fabric, this dress is so comfortable to wear. It's also fully lined! I love how this dress strikes he right balance between formal and casual. Because of the simplicity of the cut and the choice of fabric, it can easily be dressed up for a special occasion, or dressed down with sneakers and a denim jacket for a casual brunch. I'll be wearing this number all summer long!
FOUR // North of North
As luck would have it, my husband came across this new television series called North of North on CBC. The show follows Siaja, an Inuk woman trying to get her life together after a dramatic split from her husband Ting. The entire show is set in a remote Arctic village in Nunavut. I appreciate how the show is simply set in an Inuit context rather than being about the Inuit culture. That being said, the Inuit culture is very much featured in the show, yet is presented in an appreciative rather than appropriative manner. It's a relatable show about a small-town community that tries to overcome hurdles while staying grounded, all peppered with a healthy dose of humour. I really appreciate that the production team for this series was mostly comprised of Inuit, First Nations and Métis peoples. I think it's important to give these communities opportunities to tell their stories and the arts is a great way of communicating these messages. I truly enjoyed this series and am thrilled it was renewed for a second season!
FIVE // Schoolhouse Puzzle
I've been trying to make a dent in my puzzle pile. Now that book club is over, I can turn my attention to other relaxing activities like puzzling. I really enjoyed this one and the image transported me to my Anne of Green Gables and Filles de Caleb mindsets. I guess old-timey school houses were common settings for stories of yesteryear. It reminds of the simpler times, although I suspect those living in those times did not romanticize them the way we do today. It was an easier puzzle because it was another 500 piece one, so that helps. I started back up easy with my puzzling by opting for 500 piece puzzles as opposed to my usual 1000 piece ones. I feel I'm getting the puzzling bug again and am thrilled about it!
