Mimi Takes Five - #148

ONE // Prince Philip's Funeral
It was a very solemn occasion on Saturday, as I watched the live feed of the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Prince Philip, but was not surprised. He has lived and long and full life, but was in and out of the hospital these last few years. The British royal family sure knows how to do pomp and ceremony. Even this paired back event, due to the current restrictions, was not lacking in grandeur. I was not expecting to get so emotional, but witnessing such public grief from the family, it was hard not to. The entire ceremony was very moving and every small detail was a nod to Philip, who had extensively planned the entire thing. The moments that got me the most were seeing his children walk in the procession, his ponies and carriage driving accessories, the lone bagpiper walking away, and the lowering of the casket into the vault. Most of all, the hardest thing to see was the Queen sitting very much alone, head bowed. My heart broke for her in those moments. Funerals are never easy, but I couldn't imagine grieving in such a public way...

TWO // Tea Box
My second David's Tea subscription box arrived this week and I was giddy with excitement. There's just something about the element of surprise and not knowing what will be in it! I think I squealed when I opened it and clapped eyes on a set of four colourful tumblers with matching lids and straws. The writing on it changes when containing a cold liquid, making them the perfect things to carry around all of the iced teas I'm bound to be drinking this summer. Then, there was a selection of eight varieties of teas and most are fruity blends, perfect for iced teas. I cannot wait to sample these goodies! As much as I love my tea lattes, iced tea season is upon us and I plan to stay hydrated with refreshing blends. Also, it's not too late to sign up for the Tea Tasting Club boxes as they are now available on a pay-as-you-go basis.

THREE // Velvet Bow Barrette
Those who know me know that I love a good bow; and the bigger, the better! Staying true to myself, I added this big, black velvet bow barrette to my hair accessory collection last fall and it's marvellous. I have a few different velvet bow hair ties, but I have a soft spot for the barrette as I find it easier to style and set in my hair. It's such an easy statement pieces to add sophisticated flair to any and all outfits.

FOUR // Satin Pillowcase
I'd been wanting a satin pillowcase for the longest time and finally found one at Homesense! I've been sleeping on it for a few weeks now and absolutely love it! I find it really does help minimize hair frizz, which is an issue I get, especially when it's humid. I also like how it never gets too hot or cold. All in all, I'm really loving this switch and am considering getting another one to take with me when I start travelling again...

FIVE // Dragonfly in Amber
So I watched the Outlander series a couple years ago now and was hooked from the very beginning! I love historical settings and costumes, so this was right up my alley. I binged the first four seasons and had to wait for the fifth (and now the sixth...) To pass the time, I figured I'd read the books. My sister had lent me the first two books of the series and it took me about a year and a half to read the first one. I'm not proud to admit that timeline, but it's the truth. I guess when you know what happens next, it's easier to put the book down for a few weeks or months at a time, ha ha! All that to say that I finished the first book on Easter weekend and started the second one the very next day. I'm already a third of the way through, so hopefully making up for my bad track record! I have to say, the first two seasons of the show were quite faithful to the books with a few discrepancies, which is to be expected.

P.S. A publishing date was announced for the ninth book of the series this week. Go Tell the Bees That I am Gone will be released in November23, 2021. Only one book left after this one, so I've got time to catch up before it is released!
