ONE // Spring Bath Bombs
I had gone through my bath bombs stash so popped into Lush for a refill. Treating myself to a seasonal selection of bath bombs is one of my little joys in life. I take the time to go browse the new selection of bath products and sniff each one. I know the overall scent in Lush can be intense for some, but I love it! I ended up getting a fresh batch of springtime/Easter bath products. I settled on the White Rabbit bath bomb, the Cheep Cheep bath bomb and the dual-sided Surprise Bunny bath bomb. I feel like I got a two-for-one with this one. The concept is darling, perfect really! Finally, I couldn't resist getting the Chick on a Stick bubble bar. It might look a bit odd, but the stick makes it easier to reuse the bubble bar. I guess I was drawn to rabbits and chicks - 'tis the season! I'm not sure how many more baths I'll be taking this spring as the weather is starting to warm up. But I think I'm well stocked for the foreseeable. We all know the next big restash will happen in the fall (and I can't wait!)
TWO // Book Club - Week 3
This week's book club had three required readings. Three books in two weeks is a bit of a challenge. I did my very best, but fell short of finishing the third book by 70 odd pages... I did finish it the day after the meeting, so did get there in the end. The non-fiction book read like a thesis and was very academic and heavy. It was a book I needed to digest and it made me reevaluate some of the notions I grew up learning, which are actually skewed. Unlearning the wrong things to learn the right ones is part of this process. While the topic of the Métis nation can be confusing, I think it's an important one to delve into for a better understanding of their struggle and place in the Canadian context. I now have a better grasp on the topic but still have so many questions, as many also do. The other two books were novels that I really enjoyed reading. That's not to say then were pleasant to read at all times, but they depict an all to real reality. And reality is not always pretty. We follow many women of a same family and see how their stories weave together with others in a Winnipeg community. They touch on the themes or intergenerational trauma, resilience and survival during very difficult times. The Break is the first of the novels and The Strangers is the second book, that picks up where the first left off.
THREE // Reading Mode
I've been spending all of my spare time (and then some!) reading these days. While I'm loving the book club, I must admit the pace is hard to keep up with! I'm from a family of heavy readers and have read voraciously in the past but I find it comes and goes. I can read a lot for a while and then nothing. It ebbs and flows. However, don't think I've ever read so much is such a short period of time. I find I read the fiction books quicker but that tracks. The non-fiction reads tend to be denser and the themes are heavy so that makes the reading more challenging and time-consuming. Even my husband said he's never seen me read so much, ha ha! I've been spending so much time on the couch, I'm trying to vary my reading positions. The dog is more than happy to be snuggling so much, I'm sure she's loving this reading frenzy of mine. Honestly, it's nice to have the company (and moral support!) She's my little reading companion.
FOUR // Another Scarf
The other day we stopped at the flea market on our way to the sugar shack, as one does. I wasn't looking for anything in particular. But me being me spotted this printed scarf... Naturally, I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame. The colours and prints immediately reminded me of the more luxurious Hermès, Longchamp or even Coach scarves. Clearly, this was not the real thing, but it still looked decent. Maybe I'll invest in the real deal one day, but for now this dupe will do! I love the dark colour palette and horses and carriages. I mean, it's giving equestrian chic.
FIVE // Handmaid's Tale - Season 6
Honestly, this show has sort of fallen off my radar because we've been waiting for so long for the next season. Well, I found out this week that the final season of The Handmaid's Tale started this week. The first three episodes were released on Tuesday (on Hulu) and the rest of the episodes will be released weekly until the finally on May 27. We'll finally get to see how this dystopian future story ends. According to the trailer, it looks like June (and Luke) will be heading back into Gilead to save their daughter Hannah and save her from a fate similar to her mother's. The resistance is building and it appears things will come to a head in Gilead.
