Mimi Takes Five - #209

ONE // Hair Glow-up
Since the spring, I've been really good at staying on top of my hair appointments. This might seem like no big deal, but since my sister (my hairdresser of over 12 years) left town, I was struggling to find a new rhythm. Also, she used to remind me of when I needed appointments and would even book them for me. Yes, I was pampered! Now that I've settled in with my new stylist, I've been booking my next appointments before I leave the salon. I've found that's the best way for me to keep on top of it. Last weekend, I went to the salon for my usual maintenance; a root colour and a trim. However, I was reminded of hair tinsel while there and decided to get some again! My sister had gotten me hooked on the hair bling and I hadn't had any since my last appointment with her back in December of 2020... I went with copper tinsel and love how well it blends into my hair colour, but also stands out and brings the sparkle. It's the small things in life that make me happy!

TWO // Square Buckle Straw Belt
If you know anything about me by now, it's that I love a good straw or woven accessory. Straw hats and bags are high up on the list, but woven belts are up there too. By now, I must have one in every shade and buckle shape. But I did manage to find a combination I did not have - a darker brown colour with square buckle. This shade will be particularly useful to transition from summer to fall as I make way to the warmer tones and colour palettes of my wardrobe. This is the perfect belt to bridge the gap between the lighter straw coloured belt of summer and the cognac leather of fall. Wear now with a sundress and add to jeans and a blazer come September.

THREE // S'mores Puff Pastries
I saw this reel on Instagram the other day and was instantly inspired to do the same. I already had all the ingredients at home, and with it being s'mores season and all, was in the mood for the sweet treat. It was so easy to make! I used a store-bought puff pastry so simply had to unroll the sheet and cut it into 12 pieces. I then grabbed a milk chocolate bar and put two squares each on six of the pastry pieces. I then cut jumbo marshmallows in half and put a half on top of each square of chocolate. Then it was time to sandwich the pastry pockets by putting the remaining six pieces over those with the filling. I crimped the edges with a fork and transferred them to a parchment paper lined baking sheet. I then brushed the pastries with egg wash and sprinkled graham cracker crumbs on top. Then it's bake and enjoy! They were actually very delicious - so flaky and sticky from the melted marshmallow! I'm already looking forward to making them again and trying it out with mini Halloween chocolate bars...

FOUR // Lilac Workout Dress
I couldn't resist trying out this workout dress with built-in shorts from Old Navy. I love their workout skort, so thought this would be a great warm-weather workout piece to add to my rotation. I had a hard time settling on a colour because they were all such good options. However, the lilac won out. I hesitated on the size to get because I usually get M for tops and L for bottoms in Old Navy workout wear. I ended up getting the L dress. While the piece is very comfortable, I do find the top half to be a bit on the larger side in terms of fit for me. I tightened the straps and that seems to do the trick. I was also thinking I could just wear a sports bra underneath too if I really wanted. I will say the shorts on the dress are slightly shorter than on the skort... I prefer the length of the shorts on the skort as I find the shorts on the dress ride up more easily. I'd say this dress is a good option for light exercise like walks or maybe tennis, but not great for intense sweat sessions. However, it is a good option of athleisure wear to just bum around or run errands.

FIVE // Big Brother - Season 24
My husband and I have been watching the current season of Big Brother US and it's a good one. Honestly, we weren't sure we'd get into it, but decided to give it a try. The cast is a very good one this year and the twists and turns are truly unexpected, from both the production team and the cast members themselves. It's actually quite entertaining as the game is moving along without the patterns of past seasons. I've also been really enjoying the competitions so far. Some have been very creative and keep the game interesting. I'm sure we'll see some of the traditional comps, but they are definitely thinking outside the box; something that had been somewhat lacking these past few seasons. I'm hoping the game keeps evolving the way it has because it's really forging its own path this year.
