ONE // Fall Cushions
The third and final autumnal décor bit I got at Homesense was this bundle of fall cushions. I've already had a 3D pumpkin pillow for a few years now (which I absolutely love), but I had been on the lookout for a leaf or mushroom cushion to add to my space. I had seen a few options but nothing spoke to me quite like this little bundle. The leaf is perfection and the tiny acorn is the sweetest! The pumpkin is great too and thankfully it was a different shade to the one I already have. I have a thing for seasonal cushions because they don't only add to the autumnal mood but they are literal cozy bits that make snuggle season so much better. Functional décor is the way to go!
TWO // Autumn Groom
It was time for our pup's regular grooming session. She was perfectly fluffy, but it was starting to look shaggy, so time for a trim and a pamper. This time of year, her grooming happens to align perfectly with sweater weather. When all the fluff and insulation are gone, she gets cold easily. So, we turn to her colourful collection of knitwear. We popped on her blue sweater and she was perfectly cozy. She's a big snuggle bug and loves nothing more than a good cozy cuddle. She's always extra cuddly post-groom and we are loving all the puppy snuggles, sweater and all!
THREE // Pea Soup
We are still very much on our making soup kick. This week, it was split pea and ham! My husband found a ham bone in the freezer, so he started by making his own stock. He then loaded the pot with vegetables, cooked them down and filtered in his broth. He finished off by adding the split peas and cubed ham before letting it simmer for a few hours. It is absolutely delicious and oh, so comforting! I had made a fresh bread to go along with it, naturally. You'd be really hard-pressed to convince of a better comfort meal than and warm soup with fresh bread in the fall. I'd accept any other form of one-pot meal like chili or stew but you need something saucy enough to sop up with the bread. We keep adding batches of soup to our freezer and things are looking pretty good for the winter months. I still have some soups left on my list, so this game is not over yet!
FOUR // Cognac Striped Top
It's no secret that I hold a very soft spot for striped tops. I have them in an array of colours and find myself wearing them season after season. They are such staples to have! One in particular that I wear all year round is a beige stripe on ivory background. It's the perfect neutral to pair with any other seasonal colour palette. I wear that one in the fall, but I was also on the lookout for a warmer colour option. Well, this cognac and black stripe version fit the bill! It's my perfect autumnal striped top. I love that the black stripes can read either black or navy, depending on how I style it. This versatility is a winning feature for me!
FIVE // Apple Pie
September is apple month to me, so it was only natural that I felt the urge to bake an apple pie. We loaded up on apples so I had plenty to spare for baking. I made my crust in the morning and let it rest in the fridge while I peeled, slices and seasoned my apple filling. I then rolled out my bottom crust, put it in the pie plate and piled on my filling. I had overestimated how many apples I needed so my filling was piled very high, almost too high! I know the filling settles during baking so was not too worried. I then rolled out the top crust and cut it into strips to make a lattice pattern. I was happy with how the assembly went and was hopeful it would turn out. Well, it came out perfectly golden, flaky and ever so tasty! After three or four years of baking apple pie, I'm feeling more and more confident with my crust and I'd say this was my best one yet!
