Mellow Yellow

"Sunshine, daisies, butter mellow, turn this stupid fat rat yellow!"
-Ron Weasley

If only there really was a spell to turn things yellow... I love this colour so much for its vibrancy and cheerfulness. Life would be great if I could change the colour of my garments at will. I would not have to buy one in every colour. It would also make packing a breeze! One can dare to dream... Today's look is very simple. I chose a beige dress with interesting pleating on the front and added bright yellow accessories. That's it, that's all!

Gem Accents

Bring on the bling! Today's outfit is all about the added bling. Many will recognize the print of the top (yes, I have the matching shorts), but it is slightly different because of the added orange gems contouring some of the flowers. I love that this simple addition gives the pattern a whole new look. The other elements that have been blinged out are the flats! Here is an example of getting the look for less. These flats are very similar to the Valentino design, yet are way more affordable! Seeing as most of the outfit was comprised of statement pieces, I had to keep it simple in the denim department and opted for black skinnies. When there are too many fun elements, they end up competing with each other for the attention. Let your statement pieces stand out and speak for themselves. Less is more!

Mini Egg Combo

Raise your hand if you like Mini Eggs! Here, we have another example of colour blocking. I went with a pastel combo, and am gaga over the result! However, my better half was quick to point out that I looked like a handful of Mini Eggs... Well, yes, now that you mention it, the colours I am wearing are similar to those of Mini Eggs. Although this was not my inspiration for the outfit, it quickly became the ongoing joke. At first glance, I'm sure some are questioning why this combination works. A classic colour blocking combo is red, blue and yellow (yes, primary colours complement one another). I simply took that combination and selected different shades of the basic colours. Red became pink, blue became turquoise and yellow became chartreuse. Experiment with the colours in your closet!

Crayola Box

Colouring was my all-time favourite pastime as a kid. I'd spend hours sitting at the kitchen table with my box of pencils and markers. I think it's safe to say I've always loved colour! I paired my bright lace-overlay yellow dress with accessories in various shades of pink, orange and coral. I must admit that the end result had me thinking of the iconic yellow Crayola box... Oh well! I embraced the cheery look and brought a bit of sunshine where ever I went!

TBT - Cozy Mini

In my book, it is ok to wear mini skirts all year round! Naturally, in the colder temperatures the skirt is paired with tights. Today's look is a take on wearing a mini during winter. Combining a black mini skirt with black tights and black booties is a sure way of making the mini winter appropriate. Also, by wearing tights, it makes the mini seem less short because no actual skin is seen. Wearing all black really elongates the legs too! Seeing as I kept the bottom of the outfit more streamline, I opted to wear volume on the top. A chunky cable-knit sweater with a cowl neck hit the mark. This was the perfect sweater to complete the look because the neckline allows for a bit of skin to peek through and makes the look seem less stuffy. If I had opted for a turtle-neck, the look would have felt more constricted. I also chose pendant earrings with the open neckline. A necklace would not have been a good jewelry choice with this particular cowl neck, but I figured I'd wear earring that would better fill out the space between the neck and shoulders.

Inner Cruella

I took the 101 Dalmations theme to heart today, but in a rather subtle way... I tapped into my inner Cruella and wore black and white all over with a hint of red on the lips. Let's start at the bottom. This parallel is obvious, I chose Dalmation print pumps because, well, Cruella had a thing for those particular spots. Moving on up, I chose this printed skirt because it sort of gives the illusion of fur, another of Cruella's favourites. Next up is the graphic t-shirt. I chose this particular shirt, not only because of the colour palette, but more importantly because it says London. The very city in which the movie is set! I wonder how many keen-eyed sleuths picked up on that last touch. Like I've mentioned, inspiration is all around. Let your imagination run wild!

Baby Blue Bouquet

This dress makes me think of picking a bright bouquet of wild flowers in the meadow. I absolutely adore the combination of colours! The flutter sleeves give the dress a fun and feminine touch. Although I am wearing a powder blue belt (to match the shoes, of course), the dress originally came with a hot pink belt. When a garment comes with an accessory, feel free to change it up! There is no law that says the garment must always be worn with the accessory with which it came. Seeing as this print has many colours to choose from, changing up the belt gives the garment so many more outfit options!

Vintage Pin-Up

(Cue jazz music here.) I absolutely could not resist this little number when I saw it. I'm a sucker for polka dots and this dress was too perfect to pass up! The corn-flower blue and white lapel collar spoke to me. I just had to wear it with chunky pearls, espadrilles and a white waist belt. The hair is in a nice chignon and the lips as red as can be! I felt like a cross between Betty Draper from Mad Men and Lucille Ball. I felt right at home in this outfit. I swear I was born in the wrong decade!

Spotted Mini

I spot a Pongo inspiration! The iconic Disney pooch is probably the most well-known Dalmatian. I was inspired by this character when putting today's outfit together. I chose red flats because Pongo wore a red collar. I also thought the bow-tie blouse was similar to something Anita wore in the park scenes at the beginning of the movie. A little bit of one character with a little bit of another and voilà, one unique outfit!

Shower Romper

I will be a first-time aunty very shortly and got to attend the baby shower! It was a hot day, so I wanted to stay cool, yet put together. I grabbed this white romper with lace detailing. Added a gold plated belt, some platform sandals and a statement necklace to spice things up. I was ready in not time. Gotta love those rompers for easy dressing in two steps.

Step 1: grab a romper.
Step 2: add accessories.
Done!

This method might come in handy for the new mom-to-be. There won't be much time allotted to dressing once the little bundle arrives.

Colour My World

BAH-BAM! Now that is what I call a mega pop of colour! I've had this popping coral dress for a few years now, and it never lets me down when I want to shine bright! Today, I paired it with a captivating rainbow stripped scarf and belted it with a teal belt. This is a fun and unusual way to wear a scarf in the summer. It is sure to add flair and movement to any outfit. The earrings and the belt pick up on some of the colours in the scarf. Seeing as I was popping colour all over the place, I chose nude lace-up sandals. My tootsies were definitely incognito today!

TBT - Teal it Like it is!

Teal and peplum: two of my favourite things. I paired this simple sheath dress with a black peplum jacket, black burnout tights, black booties and a black belt. I then sprinkled a few gold accessories to match the hardware of the belt and called it a day. The combination of peplum and waist belt really emphasize the waist and the hourglass figure. It's a simple trick that does wonders for the silhouette! I chose burnout tights to add a bit of whimsy to the outfit. I thought that black opaque tights would have been to much, too stern of a look. The look was fancy, feminine and fun all in one!

Something New and Something Blue

Summer is also known as wedding-season, so it's no surprise I got to attend one. I chose this metallic gold and cobalt tweed dress I had purchased in a shop about a year ago. I was waiting for the right occasion to wear it! This is a handmade piece, which means it is not perfect. I love the gold zippers at the waist and wore a double gold pendant necklace to pick up on that shine. It was also the time to break out the full silver and gold Pandora charm bracelet. Since the blue is very subtle in the material, I chose to accessorize with that colour. In come the cobalt shoes, clutch and fascinator. I never miss an opportunity to wear a fascinator! Although, it is not a common practice in Canada, I just love wearing one to a wedding. On this day, I was lucky enough to have my sister (a very talented hair stylist) do my hair! I had also packed a pair of flat cobalt sandals to change into once the party got started. I was able to boogie the night away in total comfort!

Floppy Hat and Polka Dots

Polka dots are part of the classic prints. They're right up there with stripes and plaid. This is another black and white outfit, although this time it's more beige and black. Both the top and bottom have the same print and it works! The print in the pants is much smaller in size than that in the top. The dots on the pants are so small that the pants could be considered a solid colour. Another difference that makes this match work is that the print in the pants is sparser whereas the spots in the top are denser. I wore my string of pearls and beige sandals to pick up on the beige in the top. This gives the look cohesiveness. I topped the outfit with a wide-brimmed straw hat. Seeing spots anyone?

Breezy Does It

This is my pastel version of Disney's Pocahontas' Colours of the Wind! It reminds me of the scene in which colourful leaves are twirling around her. Obviously, the leaves twirling around me are simply a figment of my imagination... I really like the way this panel top fits and I was excited to have a pair of blue pants that matches exactly one of the shades found in the print. I love it when things just come together in perfect harmony!

Cut-Out Romper

I live in my rompers during the summer. Kind of like going to the drive-through speeds things up when grabbing a bite to eat, choosing a romper is like using the drive-through when picking something to wear! Hum, drive-through closets... now there's an idea. Quick, easy and fuss-free dressing! All-kidding aside, the romper is one of my favourite summer staples. Pack one of these babies in your suitcase, and you'll be ready for anything your vacation will through your way!

Flower Garden

Soft yellow and delicate petals remind me of my grand-mother. She also loves the colour yellow and is an avid gardener. The flowers in her gardens were always in full bloom. I just love the delicateness of flower petals. Flowers are definitely one of nature's true beauties. If a fresh bunches of flower can brighten the darkest days, wouldn't a feminine floral print do the same? I think so! I sure had a cheerful day in this outfit.

Minion Inspiration

I have always loved the colour yellow! It can be bright and cheerful or soft and sweet. I also have a slight obsession with the Minions. How could you not? They are cute, funny and love bananas! Today's outfit is inspired by the little yellow guys. I wore a bright banana-yellow dress with a light denim jacket (I realize the Minions denim overalls are a darker shade, but it is summer right now, so I went lighter). I added a pop of colour with the pink belt and earrings. I finished off with my trusty nude lace-up sandals. I sure am getting a lot of wear out of these lately!

TBT - Burgundy Bundle

Throwing this one back to early spring. The air was still a bit nippy on that day, so I opted to wear a cozy wrap sweater and a cloche hat. I went for the monochromatic look and built a 2-in-1 outfit. One version for outdoors and one version for indoors. I wore black tights with black boots to elongate the leg and not take away the focus of the deep colour of the dress and the statement belt. The exposed zipper of this dress is lined with black leather, which gives it a bit of a rocker vibe. By adding the ultra-feminine belt, I managed to tone down the edginess and create an overall softer look.

Heat Wave Art

I recently experienced a brutal heat wave. On the day I wore this outfit, it was hotter here than it was in Cuba! I mean, I like a hot summer as much as the next person, but when it is so muggy you have difficulty breathing, it's a bit much. The other issue with 40 degree-weather is: what to wear? One wants to stay relatively cool and work appropriate at the same time. Not an easy feat! Simple, bold sheath dress to the rescue! This bright watercolour print is a work of art, and totally appropriate for a summer day. It is sleeveless, has an appropriate length hemline and a conservative neckline. The perfect fit for a day like today. I wore my hair up (a no brainer in this heat) and added a cute little hair piece to give the look a bit more flair. The chunky pearls and white espadrilles are the perfect finishing touches.

Prints All Around

This printed dress is super cute and super comfortable. I never purchase something full price at Banana Republic, so this dress was purchased on sale. The interest here is all in the details: the flirty ruffled flounce skirt, the layered top with back cutout, the exposed back zipper and, of course, the fun print. This dress is a tad more on the formal side, but today's outfit is a bit more of a casual take. I added a bold statement necklace in mint and leopard print sandals. The sandals work here because, not only is leopard a neutral, but the base colour of the print closely matches my skin tone at the moment (I like to call it my summer colour!). They blend in and elongate the leg. This dress embodies some of my favourite features of late: prints, crop top, black and white and ruffles!

Tropical Palette

Flamingos, pineapple and starfish! These are all things that come to mind when I look at this outfit. One could say it was inspired by a tropical sunset. At first, I thought the combination of fuchsia, orange and mustard was way out there. But then, I warmed up to the combination and absolutely love it! If I can't be sitting on a tropical beach, I might as well gest inspired by it. It only occurred to me recently that the outfit reminds me a bit of the costume Marilyn Monroe wore in There's No Business Like Show Business, while performing "Heat Wave". It's a bit of a stretch, but all three colours are featured in her outfit! Check it out.

Day Tripping

I love going on day trips to quaint little areas. They are real gems to discover! I really enjoy browsing the shops and boutiques, as well as strolling down the historical streets. There are usually great restaurants to grab a bite in. Of course, there is always room left over for some homemade fudge! Today, I was spending a day on the boat and I was docking in town for a relaxing afternoon of shopping and picnicking by the river. I wore a simple short and tank combination (with my swimsuit underneath, like I've mentioned before, dress for the occasion). I also wore flat sandals, seeing as they’re the best for walking on cobble-y streets and rocking docks! Of course I needed a hat and sunglasses to protect me from the scorching sun (it sure was a hot one!) I finished off with a Longchamp tote to carry the essentials and a few bits of jewelry, just because! It turned out to be a perfect, low-key, summer day.

Romper Fun

OK, I clearly have a thing for black and white... Nonetheless, I absolutely adore this romper. It has the cutest open back feature! I wore this to a family dinner and figured that I'd wear something practical, seeing as small children would be around, and you never know when you'll end up playing on the floor. Always dress for the occasion!

Animal Instincts

I like to call this look Sophisticated-Safari! The skirt is a classic pencil shape with a front slit, but in a terrific print. I consider animal prints to be neutrals, but in this case, it is definitely the eye-catching piece. I kept the rest of the outfit very neutral, not to say bland. I added a bit of interest to the look with the accessories. Lace-up sandals, a bow belt and a multi-strand pearl necklace add dimension and personality. Let's face it, if it wasn't for the skirt, this outfit would be Blah-Boring-Beige.

TBT - Concert Glam

I went to a concert very last minute (I bought my ticket the day of)! This is very unusual for me. I am more of a planner than a spontaneous type. That said, I did not have spare time to plan an outfit. I grabbed this funky jacket and simply paired it with a white silky tank and some black skinnies. I added some glamorous chandelier earrings and I was all set!  It turned out to be a perfect outfit: not to over the top, yet not too boring either.

Rainbow Bright

I feel like both bright colours and pastels pop on a nice tan. Why not wear both at once? I selected the striped top first and found matching items in bolder shades of the colours found in the top to complete the look. I am quite happy with the result. The muted colours pop more because of the brighter ones and the bright colours are toned down by their pastel counterparts. It's a win-win situation!

Short and Sweet

Sometimes there is no need to over complicate things. Pairing a simple shirt with a pair of black Bermudas is a tried and true combination. I opted for a vintage-y floral print t-shirt and added a gold double pendant necklace that picked up on the gold in the sandals. Easy dressing gets you out the door quicker, so go ahead and keep it simple.

Polynesian Flair

I love a good black and white print and I am definitely feeling this Polynesian vibe! This print just brings me back to island living, walking on the sand with a coconut drink in hand. I kept the rest of the outfit simple by sticking to a black ruffle sleeve top and a black statement necklace. The shape of the necklace echoes the feel of the print in the shorts: bold, yet rustic. I added a pop of colour with the sandals and topped off the outfit with a panama hat. Comfortable to travel in, yet put together enough for a family get-together.

P.S. This was my first ever J.Crew purchase. I was swooning over these shorts on the mannequin and was lucky enough to find a sole pair left in the sale section. They happened to be my size! Once I got to the cash, they were another 50% off the sale price. I practically squealed with joy! Talk about shopping karma, this purchase was meant to be!

Crop It Like It's Hot

The hotter it gets, the less clothes I wear, within reason of course! Today, I opted for high-waisted shorts and a crop top. To not exaggerate, I added a knotted chambray top and covered a bit more skin. Try to wear your button-up shirts in creative ways by wearing them open over a camisole or a dress, or even by knotting them at the waist. You’ll get far more use out of them! I finished off the look with black and gold sandals. All set for running errands in balmy weather!

Beach Princess

The Little Mermaid is one of my all-time favourite Disney movies! That is why I could not pass up this swimsuit cover-up! It instantly reminded me of the beach dress Ariel had improvised. It is a dead-ringer for it! I was definitely channeling my inner princess on the beach in this get-up! The only thing missing was the slanted rock to sing on! Lol!
