ONE // Quilted Barn Jacket
I have been toying with the idea of adding a barn jacket to my wardrobe for a few years now. Having grown up in the country, I found myself questioning whether the styling would border on costume-y. With the abundance of selection of this style in stores this season, I decided to get one at a reasonable price point to test it out. If I like it, I might invest in an upgrade. I was on the fence between these two styles from Old Navy - the beige canvas and the olive quilted. Ideally, I would have gotten both, but I showed some restraint and settled on the quilted option because I found it to be a bit more versatile in that it could be dressed up. The canvas option was giving more utilitarian to me. My only hesitation with the quilted coat was the olive colour. I'd say olive is usually a colour that doesn't work for me. However, I've gotten away with wearing olive pants in the past so thought the coat could work. The colour reads more like darker green with brown undertones. I love the silhouette and the quilted details. The corduroy collar is a must on this style of coat, in my opinion. I think it will fit in very well with my autumnal colour palette of burnt orange, chocolate brown, cognac, burgundy and mustard. It's a great lightweight material and roomy enough for a few layers underneath - making it a perfect option for fall. I've worn it a few times so far and am very happy with it!
TWO // Roasted Red Pepper & Tomato Soup
Since the beginning of September, my husband and I have been making one soup a week. Fall is soup season, after all, so we are leaning into the spirit of cozy season with a weekly soup. Not only are we really enjoying these comforting meals, but we are also making a point of freezing a batch. This way, we are stocking up our freezer with delicious, hearty soups that will come in handy in the winter months. So far we've made a cabbage soup, a split pea with ham soup, a butternut squash soup, a carrot soup, a French onion soup and the latest in our soup-making streak is roasted red pepper and tomato. This is one of the easier soups as you simply roast all the vegetables, then blend them with broth. This time I also made a fresh bread that we sliced up to make grilled cheeses to dunk in our soup. It was scrumptious, reminiscent of a classic childhood meal!
THREE // Spooky Bath Bombs
Since the weather has cooled a bit, I've been back on my bath routine. When Lush releases their fall/Halloween offerings, I know bath season is well and truly around the corner. Naturally, I stock up on bubbly goodies in anticipation of my cozy soaks. I have my favourites (and always hope they come back every year) like the Pumpkin and the Ghost. Other favourites also came back, but I decided to try a few new ones this year. Besides, discovering new bath bombs is half the fun, right? I love going into the store and getting to actually smell them before I purchase. I can be particular about scents, so this way I ensure I get bath bombs that truly tickle my senses. Get it? I landed on the Skull (cool mint) and the Mummy (citrusy) options. Finally, I splurged on the Fairy House! It's a really cute bottle design and it's filled with fizzy pink crystals. It's such a fun and interactive bath bomb. I actually decided to split it in half and get two baths out of it. I tend to do this with really big bath bombs as I like to stretch out the fun where I can. I love the pumpkin and grapefruit scent profile of this one, it's totally in line with my preferences! Taking a bath is one of my go-to self-care luxuries. I don't often splurge on fancy coffees or take-out lunches, so buying bath bombs is a way I treat myself.
FOUR // Princess Diaries 3
We'd been hearing whispers of a potential third instalment of the Princess Diaries for years now (and I was secretly hoping the rumours were true!) Well, it has officially been confirmed by none-other than Crown Princess Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi herself! Actually, Anne Hathaway confirmed it on her socials with a cheeky little shut up montage. It looks like it will go into production sometime next year. We know Anne will reprise her role, but I'm still unsure about Julie Andrews. I really do hope she makes an appearance, it just wouldn't be the same without her! I'll be keeping close tabs on the development of this movie as I await it with great anticipation. In the meantime, the first two movies are on Disney+. Miracles do indeed happen!
FIVE // Burgundy Plaid Flannel
While my array of plaid flannels is quite extensive, I somehow come across a colourway I don't have... Funny how that works! I mean, I know there are endless possibilities when it comes to tartan colour combinations so statistically speaking, I'm sure to keep finding new ones I like. That is both comforting and unsettling. Either way, this year, I came across this beautiful burgundy plaid shirt. It's got that oversized feel (which is different than my go-to) so has a different overall silhouette. I love the richness of the colour palette and flannel shirts are just so dang comfortable and easy to wear. Who wouldn't want a closet full?
