Mimi Takes Five - #399

ONE // Garlic Bread
It was just a matter of time before I attempted to make a garlic sourdough. I wasn't even planning on it when I made my dough the night before, it was only the next morning that I thought of garlic when I was asking my husband what flavour he wanted. We both like garlic bread, so figured this couldn't be bad. So we added some jarlic and sprinkled some parmesan-herb seasoning on the dough before I shaped it. Once in the oven, the garlic smell filled the house and, I admit, what quite overbearing... I feared we might have been heavy-handed with the flavour. However, the bread baked beautifully and the taste was just right. We sliced it up and had it alongside a fresh batch of chili. It was the perfect combination! I also decided to make grilled cheese sandwiches with the bread the next day. I got fancy and used real cheese, some sliced apples and fig jam. Boy was that a delicious combination! Overall, other than the overpowering garlic smell while baking, this bread was a winner and I'm tempted to do it again!

TWO // Define Jacket
I've been a fan of the Lululemon Define jacket for years. They've really been a go-to top layer for any and all working out. I mostly like them as a layer under a jacket or coat for colder weather outdoor activities. That being said, they are also great for going to and from a workout class. This is how I wear my Define jackets most often. I love wearing them to my tap classes. I tend to take them off after the warm-up and then put them back on for the way home. I find this helps keep my coats from getting too sweaty after an intense class. I also like wearing them to travel because they are so comfortable and pack easily. I have a black one that is over 12 years old and a deep teal version that is about 10 years old. I was browsing the website earlier this year and the deep plum version with gold zippers really caught my eye. I stalked it until it was back in stock and decided to treat myself. It's easier to splurge on a piece you know you'll get lots of wear out of. Welcome to the rotation, Black Plum jacket.

THREE // Pickle Poutine
With the weather warming up, it can only mean one thing - chip truck season is upon us! I had my first poutine of the season last week during Poutine Fest on campus and it was glorious! I didn't know pickle poutine would be on the menu, but it was the easiest decision! I am a die-hard dill pickle fan and will try any and all pickled-flavoured foods. The humble poutine is objectively perfect on its own, but adding shredded pickles and a drizzle of dill white sauce can only make it better. I remember this being on offer for a limited time last summer but I had missed out. I'm happy to say I corrected a wrong and all is well in the world again. I can't wait for Golden Fries to open their local truck this week, I think I know what take-out we'll be getting this weekend...

FOUR // W8ban Documentary
I came across this French documentary that delves into the preservation of Indigenous languages in Quebec. I've been doing my best to learn and unlearn as much as I can about Indigenous peoples in Canada. Colonization was horrendous to these peoples and its consequences are still so far-reaching today. One of the so-called goals of the residential school system was to prevent the younger generations from learning their languages and cultures. Sadly, many Indigenous languages have disappeared as a result. This documentary explores the glimmers of hope in Quebec, where there are still 11 Indigenous languages spoken today and the efforts that are made in preserving them and passing them down to future generations. Having grown up in Canada as part of the minority official language (French), I have a certain understanding of the work and resilience that goes into preserving that heritage and I believe that right should be respected for everyone.

FIVE // Puzzling
I'm still on my puzzling buzz and loving it. Puzzling is one of the few things that truly calms my mind and makes me disconnect. I find it therapeutic and mediative. A few weeks ago, I started another work puzzle in the lunchroom. I dug this box out from the bottom of the pile and I could tell it had been there a while because the box was faded by the sun. It's an image of a kitten and a chick, perfect for springtime! Seeing as it was a 500-piece puzzle with larger pieces, I thought it would be straightforward. Well, the faded image made it hard to identify certain colours. Not a bid deal, but an unusual challenge as the box is usually a great reference point. I managed just fine and got it done in the end, even though there were a few missing pieces... There was even a random leftover piece from a different puzzle! I guess this has been a well-loved puzzle after all!
