Mimi Takes Five - #374

ONE // Barn Coat
Last year, I got my first ever barn coat (a green quilted style) and I loved it so much. It was by far my most worn jacket of the season and it went with every outfit. It was the perfect weight for this time of year. Naturally, when I saw this chocolate-brown canvas option this year I didn't hesitate to get it! I love that it's essentially the same style but in a different fabric and colour. I love the mix of the dark chocolate brown with the contrasting black corduroy collar. A barn coat is a must in one's wardrobe as it's the ideal casual option for fall. I've already worn my new one a handful of times and the green version from last year is also heavy in the rotation. I can't believe I slept on this style for so long!

TWO // Mums
My husband said I could get some mums this year (because I've mentioned them so often, ha ha!) I know they are seasonal and don't tend to last very long but I do love the look of them and seeing some orange, yellow and red blooms makes me happy. We saw this giant one when doing groceries the other day so, naturally, that's the one I gravitated towards! I love how big and pompom-like this plant is and its orangey-red hue is quintessentially fall. We put it in one of our blue pots and it sits front-and-centre on our deck so that I can enjoy looking at it as much as possible. I'm thrilled with my new flowers!

THREE // Butternut Squash Soup
After skipping a week last weekend, it was time to make a butternut squash soup this week. My husband took the lead on this one and made a huge pot of delicious golden nectar. He even saved the seed and roasted them. I love topping a bowl of butternut squash soup with roasted seeds for a bit of crunch. I had also made a sourdough to have alongside. I mean, what is a batch of fresh soup without fresh bread? There's a reason it's a winning combination! Our fall soup journey continues and I suspect turkey soup will be next, what with Thanksgiving in a few days time.

FOUR // Hill House Holiday
It's the most wonderful time of the year - the Hill House holiday drops have begun! Like last year, the holiday goodies are divided into three capsules, all dropping individually. First up is the party capsule which launched on Tuesday. It's filled with dreamy holiday party dress options and I am dying for that gold and black brocade - such a classic! The Blythe dress is back this year with its statement bows and a red glittery lace Rosetta dress. If you've got a fancy festive outing planned, be sure to check out this line-up. Next week, on the 14th, we're getting the tartan capsule with classic options and finally the gift shop capsule launches on the 21st. Hill House has got all of your holiday needs covered!

FIVE // Cinnamon Raisin Sourdough
I've been on a roll lately and successfully baking my sourdoughs. This past weekend, I baked a sourdough loaf on the Saturday and was feeling pretty confident and decided to bake another the following day. However, this time I wanted to attempt a cinnamon raisin loaf. I looked up a few recipes but ultimately winged it. I followed my regular steps until the bulk fermentation. When came time to shape the loaf, I added raisins and spread a mixture of butter, brown sugar and cinnamon before folding and rolling into a ball. Everything looked great up to that point. I baked it and only when taking it out of the Dutch oven did I realize the butter had melted and dragged all the sugar to the bottom of the loaf, leaving it with a caramelized bottom. There was barely a hint of swirl left when I cut into it. The loaf baked beautifully and was tasty, but didn't look quite right. In hindsight, I shouldn't have put butter in it. I think that's where I went wrong. Next time, I'll try something different. This was by no means a fail, but it was not a great success either...
