ONE // When He Was Wicked
I finally finished book 6, Francesca's story. This is the story line we got bits and pieces of in the show and I was really curious about it. Francesca is the quiet one of the family and she fell madly in love with her soulmate to then have tragedy strike. And boy did it strike! This book really focuses on her story post-tragedy and how she's navigating grief and figuring out her life's path and purpose. The story stretches over many years so you really see the ups and downs. Now, I don't want to spoil the book, but this one was perhaps the spiciest of the bunch which surprised me seeing as it was Francesca. Now, the show made a big swap her so I'm curious to see how the storyline will go with Michaela as opposed to Micheal because this really changes things.
TWO // Dill Pickle Sourdough
It has been a hot minute since I tried making a flavoured sourdough bread. I'd been wanting to make a dill pickle loaf and finally decided to give it a whirl. As always, I improvised. I added some pickle juice to the water when I mixed the dough. I then sprinkled in some dried dill during my stretch and folds. Finally, I folded in some chopped dill pickles when shaping the dough. I was really hoping I got the pickle flavour right. Too little would be bland and too much would be too intense. To my surprise and delight, everything when smoothly. The dough looked right every step of the way and baked beautifully. It got great rise and had plenty of blisters. I did have a few bigger air bubbles at the top of the loaf and the texture was a bit gummy. Hard to tell if the starter was sluggish or if the pickle juice affected it. I'll keep experimenting! The pickle flavour was nice and subtle and the pickle bits were well dispersed throughout the bread. It was delicious toasted with a bit of butter but I bet it would make a mean grilled cheese too!
THREE // Manicure
I spent most of the summer with bare nails. Between the gardening and cleaning, I figured it wasn't worth the effort to maintain a manicure. Sure, I kept my nail trim, clean and moisturized but I never bothered with polish. Well, I just decided to go for it the other day and dug out this moody taupe shade from my nail polish stash. I was giving myself a pedicure with this colour and was feeling it so added it to my hands too. It's giving me early fall vibes and I'm leaning into it. It doesn't scream fall, but it ever so slightly hints at the upcoming season. Moody and comforting is where it's at!
FOUR // Workout T-shirt
I rarely get workout clothes from places other than Old Navy and Lululemon. It's just out of habit; once I find a place I like, I tend to stick with it. However, I did venture out of my comfort zone and got this blue workout t-shirt from H&M. It's a perfect colour match to many other workout pieces in my wardrobe and I like the fit and colour. I've worn it a few times and it's very comfortable, and holds up well during a workout. I'm surprisingly pleased with this new addition and won't hesitate to try other workout pieces from H&M.
FIVE // Gilded Age - Season 4
Yet another show to look forward to this fall! My line-up is looking pretty promising at this stage. Cocooning season will be great with all this content to consume with a cozy blanket and cup of tea. The fourth season of The Gilded Age is set to premiere sometime this fall. After having read The Second Mrs. Astor, I am so into the gilded age frame of mind again and ready to delve back into New York's society. The locations and costumes alone are reason enough to watch this show, but the characters' witty banter and shenanigans make it so entertaining. We are in for a few interesting story lines as we ended with the Russell's marriage on the rocks and Gladys finding her footing in her new life. Then we have the Oscar and Turner partnership, which should make for some entertaining moments. Finally, I'm curious about how Jack's adapting to his new social class, not to mention how the rest of Van Rhijn household (my favourite!) is getting along. As Mrs. Fish put it, I am so ready for this high-octane bustle-breaking season!
