ONE // American Royals II - Majesty
Since book club finished, I've been taking a bit of a reading break. It's well deserved! However, I picked up this book again and it's been such a joy to read for pleasure again. This is a much lighter read and I'm loving it! It's the second book of the series and it was easy for me to pick up right where I left off. I think I had read a couple chapters while on vacation in February, but I hadn't gotten too far in. I knew I wanted to bring a book camping, so this one was my pick. I also brought the third book, just in case I finished this one. I'm actually enjoying it more than the first. Being the British royal family buff that I am, I found the first to lack imagination and took too much inspiration from the real life royal family for so many details. This book is much better but some glaring similarities still jump out at me. That's what I get for being a geek, I might be a tad too critical in this situation. I honestly think the story didn't need these copycat details as it could stand on its own without making gratuitous links to the current royal family.
TWO // Black Sweatpants
I'm more of a leggings girlie, but decided I wanted to get some sweatpants before our first camping trip of the summer. I needed something a bit thicker for evenings around the campfire. While I normally gravitate towards colour, I decided to get some black sweatpants to start. I settled on this tapered pair from Old Navy. I don't know what I was expecting, but the fabric is thinner yet still substantial. It has a nice flowy-ness and they fit so comfortably. My only gripe is that they appear to be ankle length on me, which is not what the fit description says... It's not the worst thing, I always bring big socks camping but it's something to keep in mind if you are on the taller side. I'm 5'7, so not unusually tall. The regular length pants from Old Navy usually fit me just fine. I wore them all week and they were perfect!
THREE // Flannel Shirt
My mom got me this pink flannel shirt last summer. I've worn it a few times in the past year, mostly for some cozy days at home. It's oversized and super comfortable. That's why I decided to pack it on my recent camping trip because I thought it would be the perfect layer for around the campfire. I was not wrong, it was perfect! I usually bring sweatshirts or hoodies, but the fact I didn't have to pull the flannel over my head made it a perfect thing to throw on once the sun set or for cool mornings. I will always love a plaid flannel - a quintessentially Canadian style!
FOUR //Fresh Strawberries
My husband came home from work with other day saying he had a surprise for me. It was a big bag of fresh local strawberries! I had been saying how the ones we got from the store lacked in flavour and so he thought of that when he spotted a local vendor on his way home. These berries are so flavourful, juicy and fresh - a real seasonal delight! I love these tiny little moments of joy. They happen when you least expect them and totally lift your spirit! Is there anything better than a seasonal fruit being at the peak of its fruitiness?
FIVE // Summerween
For those not in the know, Summerween is the concept of celebrating Halloween in the summer, not unlike Christmas in July. I like seeing how people do a crossover and carve watermelons and give summer foods a spooky spin. It's all in good fun! Being a fall girlie, I'm all about embracing Summerween because it makes the heat more bearable... Besides, this is the time of year when stores start getting their fall/Halloween merchandise and it truly gives me life! I live for Code orange notices this time of year. Shopping for fall stuff really helps me get through the summer. I'm not a heat girl, so summer has its hard moments. That being said, I'm happy to share that Michael's has tons of new fall/Halloween décor in stores! They've got collections ranging from classic, to spooky, to whimsical and macabre - there really is something for every style and décor aesthetic. If you want to get a head start on your theme for this year, now's the time before all the good stuff is gone!
