Happy Canada Day to my fellow Canadians!
I feel like Canada Day and Canadian patriotism has felt off for a few years... In 2021, it didn't feel right to outwardly celebrate our country because of the very fresh discovery of mass graves at residential school sites. Then in 2022, there was the trucker convoy occupation of downtown Ottawa. The movement had smeared our national symbols and waving a Canadian flag felt like an association to this problematic movement. However, a few years have passed and it felt like the symbolism of our national symbols was finding its way back. While we, as a country, are still very much learning and trying to do better with regard to Indigenous Peoples, the current state and outwards threats of annexation by our southern neighbour have reignited a very strong sense of Canadian patriotism. While we do share some similar characteristics, if there is one thing most Canadians can agree on it's that we are not American. This is a distinction that speaks volumes in today's political climate. All that to say, it finally feels right again to be celebrating Canada. For all its flaws, it's still a pretty great country to live in!
