I love layering; that's no secret. But what people tend to forget about it is that layering is not only for the top half of the body. I'm a huge fan of wearing skirts with tights in the winter, so it's not a far stretch to wear shorts with tights, right? The only tricky part is that I personally feel this technique works best with thicker material shorts, and darker colours. I got these Banana Republic shorts last summer, but did not get a chance to wear them before the fire... They came back from the cleaners (tag still on) and I decided to grab them during my fall selection, hoping I would finally have the opportunity to wear them. Since the material is on the thicker side, and the cool colour palette lends itself well to dropping temperatures, I styled them with patterned tights and a cable-knit sweater. The icy grey sweater and darker grey tights help make the shorts the true focus of the outfit. I added a pop of colour with the pendant to tie the look together. I know it's unconventional, but I like how this trick helps me get away with wearing shorter shorts at work. The tights keep it all appropriate, since no skin in showing. It's less chocking to the more conservative. I would still suggest you proceed with caution before trying out this technique at work. Make sure to check your dress-codes...

TBT - Teal Next Time

It's now short weather, but I decided to throw it back to a season during which the weather was not so short appropriate. As you have probably gathered by now, the cold does not stop me from wearing shorts. I simply pair them with tights and get on my way. Today's look is simple, yet dressed up. I paired my black brocade shorts with black tights and shoes. I then added a turquoise blouse and belt for an effortlessly chic outfit. Sticking to only two colours keeps things simple and streamlines the look. The contrast is just enough to give interest, without being over the top. Black will always be a great base layer!

TBT - My Fair Shorty

Another season switch-a-roo for today's throwback! I like mixing things up, whether it be patterns or garments that wouldn't typically be worn together. I never thought I'd wear this Fair Isle knit with shorts, but by adding fun tights and layering a shirt under the sweater, I came up with an unexpected winter look. The different patterns don't clash because they are in the same colour palette. By sticking to grey, beige and black, it gave me a bit more freedom to pile on the textural elements without it getting overwhelming. If you are new to print-mixing, start with a neutral colour palette and build from there!

Dapper Dress

This look is a broad interpretation of the female version of Jay Gatsby. It has "dapper" written all over it! I paired my favourite neck-tie blouse with a peplum jacket and tweed shorts with tights. Neck-ties, collared shirts, structured jackets and tweed are all elements found in polished menswear. I simply incorporated all of the above-stated elements in a more feminine look. The peplum adds flair and defines the waist, while the neck-tie blouse is a softer version of a shirt and tie. The tweed shorts with tights are a fun twist on classic trousers. I feel Jay Gatsby would approve my take on feminine menswear. What do you say, old sport?

Spring-ing Forward

Don't forget to set forward your clocks today! When daylight savings begins, it's a sure sign that spring is here! I get excited whenever the seasons change, but I feel the transition from winter to spring is the most drastic, therefore makes me more giddy! I might have gotten a little carried away at the first sign of nice weather and reached for these bright printed shorts! It's obviously still too cold for shorts, so I decided to pair them with equally bright turquoise tights. Not wanting to go overboard, I opted to wear my white cropped eyelash sweater and fur-trimmed booties. I feel like this outfit hits the perfect notes between winter and spring!

Glam Slam

I love to turn up the glamour every now and then. Today's look is a take on glamorous work attire. Start with a basic white blouse, add a black neck-tie and you've just cranked it up a notch! Then, pair with black brocade shorts and floral patterned tights. We all know I have a soft spot for shorts with tights. These shorts might seem basic at first, but the subtle brocade adds texture and style. I chose the floral tights to pick up on the brocade pattern and keep it going along the leg. Now for the accessories! I chose a big buckled belt to make a statement. Suede booties and double pearl earrings add more edge to the look. I finished it all off with a sleek top knot and bold dark lips. This look hit all the marks and made me feel like a glamour queen!

Fierce in Faux-Fur

I've been wearing shorts with tights for ages now. It's one for my favourite tricks to getting more wear out of my shorts. Although these Polynesian-print shorts are very summery, I was inspired to pair them with sheer black tights, a rust coloured top and a black faux-fur vest. I accessorized with a multi-strand pearl necklace and black suede booties. I needed a jacket for my outside layer, but was hard-pressed to find one that would accommodate the bulk of the vest. I had an aha moment and decided to wear the vest over my jacket. Why not? It gives the jacket an entirely new look, while being extremely practical. This look felt both sophisticated and cutting-edge!
