ONE // The Music of Hans Zimmer
I randomly came across this event a couple weeks ago. I was just looking for things to do in town during January, to sort of give us something to do and look forward to. Seeing as we are both fans of Hans Zimmer, this concert seemed a perfect fit! And it happened to be on our anniversary weekend - meant to be! This was our first Ottawa Pops Orchestra concert and it will not be our last! The venue was absolutely stunning and featured a real pipe organ! Definitely a sight to behold. (Also, me being floored at finding out it's the same place I've been taking my tap class for the past five months... I had no idea that hall was behind the wooden door!) We both enjoyed the concert immensely, letting ourselves be transported by the familiar soundtracks. I'd be lying if I said it didn't bring me back to my own high school band days when we played Pirates of the Caribbean... You really can't describe the feeling of being immersed in the music of a live orchestra - especially when you are seated right next to the choir. It was such a magical evening!
TWO // Winter Boots
After thinking about it for a couple years, I finally found some good winter boots! I mostly have dressy winter boots, but was needing a heavy-duty option that would work for outdoor winter activities and that would keep me warm. Basically, I was prioritizing function in this case. After ordering a pair online and having to return because they were too small, I ended up turning to Sorel - a tried and true winter boot brand. I like the trendier look of these black ankle boots with their white pinstripe and chunky sole. I've broken them in at this point and they have been great! They are comfortable and keep my feet nice and toasty. I've worn them for hiking in the woods, sledding with kids, walking in the slush and on the ice - they worked for it all! Very pleased with my new winter boots!
THREE // January Ipsy
Well, this is the second month in a row that I've gotten the Ipsy glam bag because I liked the bag design. The January bag is not as glamorous as the red bow December bag, but I love the understated elegance of the baby blue basket weave detail and the gold hardware. It's a refreshing design that was filled with goodies, as usual. The first item I got was this eyeshadow palette. I'm loving the neutrals with differing shades of teal. I plan on bringing this with me on our tropical vacation - the vibes are vibing! I also got a foundation. I'm not usually a foundation girl, but this one was a perfect match for my skin and the application was smooth. Not my favourite item, but the product is decent. The final make-up product was a setting spray. While I find it sets well, the bottle does not spray in an even mist, but rather big droplets. It also makes my skin feel tight so not the best. Moving on to skincare. The serum feels nice and applies well, the moisturizer is lightweight and smells great, and the eye cream formula is on the thicker side, but it's aright. The final product I got was a heat-protector spray. My hair has been so static-y this winter and using this on my damp hair before drying has been working wonders.
FOUR // Cheddar Jalapeño Rolls
My husband wanted to cook last Sunday and was feeling inspired to whip up a hearty stew. I saw him coming a mile away and knew he was going to ask me to make bread. He's so predictable! I mean, he does have a point, nothing goes as well with stew as fresh bread. So, I obliged. It was too short notice for a sourdough, so I turned to my recipe binder and came across this cheddar jalapeño roll recipe I'd been wanting to try and we had a fresh jalapeño on hand. It was meant to be! Let's just say, it was the most perfect comfort meal on a cold winter's day. The rolls were delicious and had just the right amount of kick to them. This time I used marbled cheddar because that's what we had on hand but next time I plan on using a stronger cheddar to really give them that depth of flavour.
FIVE // Kinda Pregnant Trailer
Well, this looks like a funny movie! I randomly saw the trailer and immediately sent it to my sister. This is exactly the kind of stuff we'd watch together when she lived in town. I miss having my sister nearby... Anyways, we obviously keep in touch and sharing trailers to funny movies we both want to watch is just something we do. I like a light-hearted movie and the plot of this new Amy Schumer comedy about faking a pregnancy looks hilarious! I prefer non-serious movies because I want to watch TV to relax. I go for old favourites, predictable plots, cartoons and comedies. I do like other genres, but have to be in the right frame of mind to watch them. There's just so much seriousness in everyday life that I want an escape and let myself be entertained. Maybe my sister and I can even figure out a way to have a long-distance watch party!
