Floral Check

I love wearing blouses under sleeveless dresses in the winter. It allows me to get more wear out of my dresses without covering up the pretty prints and details. Wearing a blazer or cardigan would do just fine, but sometimes I don't like covering up the print. These navy and burgundy blooms are too pretty to hide under a layer. By adding a grey gingham shirt, I complement the floral print in both colour and style. The dress is still the focal point, but the printed sleeves and collar add a stylistic aspect the dress does not have on its own. I also like that the shape of the dress is not lost under looser layers. Dresses can be very structured pieces and I love to showcase that as much as I can. The belt helps emphasize the dresse's shape and contributes to the more casual feel of this overall look. The burgundy tights definitely help with that aspect. With creative layering and accessorizing I styled a structured summer dress into a casual winter look. How's that for versatility?

The Groutfit

I recently learned that wearing grey from head to toe is an actual thing and it's called a Groutfit. Makes sense, it's a combination of the words "grey" and "outfit". However, my initial thought when hearing the word was leaning more towards tile flooring than fashion... Regardless of how I feel about the name, I do like the concept of piling on varying shades of grey to make one stand-out look. Although monochromatic dressing is not a new concept, I guess the grey looks have been more prominent than others. Perhaps it has something to do with grey being a more muted and understated colour. It's more tempting to try out a new trend, but not go full-on. I guess that would explain why monochromatic yellow looks are hard to come by... (Note to self: start the Yellfit movement.) The trick in pulling this off is to vary the shades and textures of the individual components of the look. This will add dimension and interest. In today's look, I've got fur, lace, denim, suede and knits in shades of charcoal to light grey. Have fun with it, you'd be amazed how creative you can get with only a grey colour palette.

Graphic Penguin

Penguins are used to being surrounded by snow, but who's to say you can't pair them with a pretty floral print? I decided my purple penguin needed a bouquet of fresh buds to brighten its' spirit! Now, it can waddle with flair! This little lady sure waddled around in the slush today, donned in head-to-toe gray for the outdoor look. It's actually a great workout you know, taking one step forward and two steps back. It doesn't only test the legs, but the patience too! Well, if one has to trek through the slush, might as well do it in warmth and style!

Tartan Touch

A simple, yet very festive look today. I kept it easy-peasy by pairing my icey grey cable-knit sweater with my coated black jeans. The sheen from the jeans give them that slightly more cheery feel and picks up on the colour of the sweater. I then added a red plaid scarf to jazz thing up a big. Here's the kicker, I tied it in a great big bow! You can get any merrier than that! I mean, I feel like a big present! It's a subtle enough hint, but sure goes a long way. I like wearing accessories in unexpected ways, they are so versatile! When Christmas is over, I can wear this scarf again and again just by tying it up differently. The possibilities are endless! I like how this finishing touch just makes the look! To me, this is the perfect example of style vs. fashion. The scarf in itself is fashionable, but it's how I decided to wear it that makes it stylish. Have you ever tied your scarf in a bow?

Candy Cane Crush

Ok, I was clearly inspired by the traditional red and white candy-cane for today's look. Why not get inspired by a classic treat of the season? I've always liked the combination of red and white, it's clean, crisp and the pop of red gives it just the right contrast! I layered a striped shirt under my red sweater because I only wanted hints of the stripes. I then kept the rest of the outfit very muted and understated with light grey jeans and boots. I have to say, the combination of pigtails and stripes is giving me strong elf vibes... 'Tis the season after all!
